3 tips for winterising your boat's engine

Whether you're on land or afloat, the right steps for looking after your engine remain the same, to protect it from corrosion, frost and excessive humidity. For long-lasting maintenance of your engine, Bardahl's marine range is with you every step of the way.
Store fuel to keep the tank full
To avoid oxidation and condensation in the fuel supply system and combustion chamber, you should empty your tank, or fill it to the brim to reduce the risk of air getting in.
Even so, it is not advisable to drain the fuel and store dry to prevent icing up and drying out the seals. In fact, it's better to keep the tank full with a stabiliser to protect the fuel from natural deterioration over the long winter months.
Compatible with SP95 and SP95-E10 fuels, Marine 24-Month Petrol Stabiliser eliminates the harmful effects of ethanol, cleans the fuel system in season, ensures optimum lubrication of valves, pumps and injectors, and prevents parts in contact with the fuel from drying out.
This extends its shelf life by 24 months and protects you from possible engine breakdowns when you launch your boat the following season...
Treat your diesel fuel
For diesel engines, Marine Diesel Fuel Water Dispersant is also an easy-to-apply solution to prevent fuel starvation after winter.
Designed to protect against rust and corrosion, it prevents water from stagnating in the bottom of the tank by eliminating condensation. It prevents the formation of deposits in the tank, as well as injector and pump seizure, protects the fuel system and facilitates cold starting.
Bardahl has also developed a Marine Diesel Biocide Treatment to provide preventive or curative protection against micro-organisms that feed on diesel and clog filters. Its formula immediately neutralises the acids generated by bacteria, yeasts and other moulds also known as "sludge".
The treatment therefore thoroughly disinfects the fuel system and tank, protecting them from corrosion and preventing any loss of engine power, or even, in extreme cases, a total breakdown when the damage reaches the injection pump and injectors.
Change the oil and filter
It's also important to change the oil and filter before winterising your boat. This will remove any dirt that may have built up over the season.
When reassembling, a good tip is to fill the filter and grease each part of the filter so that the circuit can be restarted quickly.
Finally, to ensure optimum lubrication, Bardahl offers a wide range of transmission and base oils, as well as a spray specially designed for wintering.
Thanks to the film-forming action of its anti-corrosion oil, Marine Engine Wintering Spray effectively protects all the internal mechanical parts of the engine, whether 2 or 4-stroke, inboard or outboard.
In summary
Temperatures are dropping, and it's time to start preparing your engine for winter:
Add a fuel stabilizer to preserve the tank from moisture and avoid draining it
Pour a biocide into the tank to prevent the proliferation of "sludge" and the formation of clogs.
Spray and lubricate each engine part.
