Car Maintenance: These 5 Engine Parts Are Particularly Prone to Wear
Here are 5 particularly sensitive technical components that, over the lifespan of your vehicle, deserve your full attention.

Without rigorous maintenance, various engine components can become faulty. The consequences can sometimes be minor: loss of power, acceleration hiccups, and abnormal smoke. However, failing to maintain the parts listed below could lead to more serious issues for your engine: warning lights on the dashboard, safety mode activation, and even complete engine failure!

Valves

Each internal combustion engine operates with valves. Located at the top of the engine, these valves control the air-fuel mixture needed for proper cylinder function. Exhaust gases, which inevitably produce soot, are expelled through the opening of the exhaust valve(s). Over time, depending on driving habits and fuel quality, these valves can become coated with soot. Without proper maintenance, the valves might lose their sealing capability, leading to a loss of power. The cost of replacement varies depending on the number of valves that need replacing. According to our estimates, it can cost several hundred euros (including labor).

Injectors

Modern internal combustion engines also rely on fuel injectors. These components inject fuel into the cylinders. Over time, fuel deposits can accumulate on the injectors, especially if the fuel quality is poor. If the engine is not used, the injectors can even seize up. The consequences include starting difficulties or a drop in engine performance. The cost of replacement depends on the number of injectors that need to be replaced. According to our estimates, it ranges from several hundred euros up to approximately 1,000 € (including labor).

The turbocharger

For many years, the turbocharger has enhanced engine efficiency without increasing engine size. This technical device has become a key ally for car manufacturers, enabling them to deliver significant power from smaller, more environmentally friendly engines. Typically, a turbo works by using the engine's exhaust gases to spin a turbine. As mentioned earlier, these gases inevitably produce soot, which can accumulate on various turbo components. This accumulation can lead to abnormal operation and potentially even turbo failure. The estimated replacement cost can reach up to €3,000, including labor.

Catalytic Converters and DPFs

The catalytic converter and the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) are two key components of a vehicle's exhaust system. They play a crucial role in reducing pollutant emissions. Again, exhaust gases pass through these two systems, leaving soot that can clog them. Replacement cost is estimated to be up to 1,200 euros (including labor).

The EGR valve

“EGR” stands for “Exhaust gas recirculation”. In other words, the EGR valve recirculates exhaust gases to make them less harmful to our health and the planet. How? By sending them back into the engine’s intake system to burn them again and thus reduce emissions, in particular, of nitrogen oxide (NOx). Exhaust gases leave soot residues in the EGR valve. Over time, but also depending on driving style, the latter can become clogged. Estimated replacement cost of up to €1,750 (including labour).

A solution to avoid costly replacements

As you will have understood, these 5 engine parts are all sensitive to fouling. Good maintenance and preventive cleaning of each of these parts is therefore recommended.

This is why Bardahl, your engine protection partner, has developed the 5 in 1 Degreaser. It acts, without disassembly, on each engine component in an effective and safe manner. In addition to avoiding the replacement of these parts, the use of Bardahl 5 in 1 Degreaser (Diesel, Petrol, Hybrid, Ethanol) limits pollutant emissions, avoids excessive fuel consumption and increases your chances of passing the anti-pollution tests of the technical inspection.

In summary, this additive offers many benefits: savings, a high-performance engine kept in good condition and therefore, limited pollutant emissions.
