Cleaning the EGR valve
By Bardahl • The 2/7/2019 • 5 min reading

With poor operation, carbon builds up over time and eventually clogs the EGR valve. Then, your engine's performance decreases, black smoke and consumption increase! With our solutions, you will avoid replacing your EGR valve prematurely!
What is an EGR valve used for?
The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve is an engine component that is mandatory on diesel engines and some petrol engines. It reduces emissions of gases that are harmful to humans and the environment by circulating some of the exhaust gases back into the engine.
Thus, NOx, composed of nitric acid and nitrogen dioxide, are partially burned in your engine when it is under low load (at an engine speed that varies depending on the vehicle brand). Obviously, this has consequences on engine fouling and on the EGR valve directly.
How and why does an EGR valve get clogged?
Over time and with driving style, the EGR valve accumulates soot and eventually becomes blocked. If it is stuck in the closed position, your vehicle will drive normally, but you will pollute more and you will be refused the technical inspection.
On the other hand, with an open valve, you will seriously damage your intake system and cause other breakdowns! Depending on the vehicle, the average cost of replacement varies between €450 and €2,000.
Blocking or removing your EGR valve is prohibited by law and you will definitely be refused the technical inspection. It is important to clean your EGR valve from time to time to avoid replacement.
Why clean your EGR valve?
Maintaining your engine is essential to increase the lifespan of your vehicle and, above all, reduce repair costs. But that's not all!
Cleaning your EGR valve with Bardahl products allows:
- Removal of gum, varnish, soot and deposits on the EGR valve
- To restore airflow to the combustion chambers and eliminate holes during acceleration
- Perfect combustion
- To limit excess fuel consumption
- To prevent the formation of deposits
You can also add our EGR valve cleaner directly into the tank or go to one of our 3000 partner garages.
How do I know if my EGR valve needs cleaning?
Prevention is always better than cure. With preventive use of our additives, you will avoid problems with clogged EGR valves. If you have not yet had this reflex, there are many symptoms that can alert you before breaking down. This is never serious at first, but the consequences can be expensive in repairs if you do not react:
- Black smoke increasing
- Technical inspection refused
- Loss of power
- Orange or red engine light
- Low RPM Power Holes
How to clean and maintain an EGR valve?
In order to avoid the costs associated with replacing your EGR valve (from €450 to €2,000), there are 3 solutions:
1. A bottle to pour into your fuel tank
Our additives are easy to use. Simply add them to your tank either as a preventative or curative measure.- If you drive in the city or only make short trips, clean it every 5000km or once a year with Bardahl EGR cleaner.
- You regularly drive on the motorway: clean every 10,000 km or once a year with Bardahl EGR cleaner
- Consider driving in a lower gear from time to time. For example, drive at 120 km/h in 5th gear instead of 6th, for a period of 15 minutes.
2. A complete decarbonization kit with disassembly
- For the more handy among you, a complete cleaning kit exists by dismantling the EGR valve. Many tutorials exist on the internet to dismantle this part (+/- 15 minutes)
3. EGR and engine decarbonization
The most efficient and innovative process on the market for cleaning your EGR valve is Bardahl’s eco engine cleaning! With the largest network of professionals in the world in this field, our 3000 experts will decarbonize your engine to give it a new lease of life!
Where other hydrogen decarbonization methods attempt to clean all the organs of your engine by injecting a solution only into the intake, Bardahl treats each element independently for an optimal result!
Your injectors, intake, EGR valve, turbo and FAP are cleaned between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
Concrete and immediate results
- A reduction in your consumption and therefore an increase in autonomy.
- A reduction in the opacity of exhaust fumes and therefore a reduction in harmful emissions.
- A smoother, more dynamic ride.
- A return to original power and responsiveness.
