Storage of engine oil: where and for how long?
If you do your own oil changes and your car often needs a top-up, you probably have an open can of oil in your garage. But how long can you keep it and under what conditions?

Duration of synthetic oil storage

« The shelf life of an oil mainly depends on the amount of synthetic base oil. Indeed, a 100% synthetic oil cannot oxidize, allowing it to be stored for longer periods. In practice, this can be up to 5 years », explains Guillaume B, Product Development Manager at Bardahl. Beyond this period, oil manufacturers generally do not guarantee the full effectiveness of their lubricant.

Shelf life of mineral oils

In contrast to a 100% synthetic oil, a mineral oil is less saturated and therefore more unstable with temperature changes. This type of oil generally has a shorter shelf life: around 3 years on average.

If your oil container has already been opened, it is advisable to use it within the year following its opening.

Under what conditions?

In its container, the oil should be kept at a stable temperature, below freezing and under 50°C, preferably away from light and humidity. It is also recommended to keep it upright, as it is displayed in stores. If the container is opened, before use, ensure that the oil has not come into contact with water, dust, or any other contaminants.
